Song of the Universe

The Song of the Universe

Jean Louise Quino/Diabetic Products

When Mandy Moore crooned, “There’s a song that’s inside of my soul; it’s the one that I tried to write over and over again,” no one probably saw the profound truth in what seemed to be just another highly embellished line. I’ve always loved the lyrics of this song, especially the lines that say, “Sing to me the song of the stars; of your galaxy dancing and laughing and laughing again.”  Beautiful figure of speech, I used to muse.

Little did I know that there is indeed such a thing as a song in our DNA and a song of the stars.  As unromantic as it may sound, scientists are now assigning notes to the different values of the amino acids in each DNA sequence to enable them to see the larger pattern. The result -music in the form of "protein songs”.
Beneath the pale moonlight, there are also songs sung by beings much, much, larger than your DNA strand.   Since the advent of Radioastronomy, scientists have been listening to the song of the stars, echoing toward the earth in the form of radio waves.

The universe is composed of a succession of different levels of good, and this is in harmonic ratio with the good present in every man’s soul. The song of your DNA is supposed to be playing to the same rhythm as the song of the stars.

One of the greatest mathematician and philosophers of all time - Pythagoras  - has known this long before man ever heard of DNA. During his time, he cured many ailments: physical, spiritual and mental by playing his especially prepared compositions in the presence of the afflicted. He was also known to use songs to clear the mind of his students and inspire them.

The Syrian philosopher Iamblichus described Pythagoras’ therapeutic music thus: “And there are certain melodies devised as remedies against the passions of the soul, and also against despondency and lamentation, which Pythagoras invented as things that afford the greatest assistance in these maladies. And again, he employed other melodies against rage and anger, and against every aberration of the soul. There is also another kind of modulation invented as a remedy against desires." (See The Life of Pythagoras.)

Long before man even theorized about the song of the stars,  Pythagoras already recognized the connection between the seven Greek modes and the planets. They knew how to neutralize the various modes and passions of man by keeping the song of his soul in step with the song of the universe.

Central to the belief of the Phytagoreans is that everything in existence has a voice but man fails to hear the melody because his soul is entrapped by materialism.  There’s a reason why ascetism offers much freedom and great peace of mind. Those who are in sync with the rhythm of the universe are the happiest people on earth – they know no fear and they radiate joy wherever they go.

Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual imbalances cause a breakdown of cells which in turn cause illness or disease. Experiments and studies have proven the validity of the Pythagorean music-healing connection. Presently, music therapy is already a well-recognized branch of health profession that also has its own share of successes.

Indeed, harmony recognizes its very own, and when one regains his true self – that is, his oneness with all of creation, he will not only hear the song of the universe but also become one with the One  Eternal  Good which controls its infinite number of selves in everything that exists.

How to Program Your Stem Cells to Become Pancreatic Cells
Jean Louise Quino/Diabetic Products

If you have been afflicted with diabetes for some time now, you know very well that there’s no known medicine that can cure your disease - only medications to help you cope. But the story doesn’t end there. In previous posts we have learned that thoughts and emotions can greatly influence how the body works. This is nothing new. Mind over matter used to be considered an art, but now it has become a branch of medical science that’s increasingly growing in popularity.

In one of my research projects, I stumbled upon this unusual practice by an anthropologist at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, – he talks to his medicine before taking them! “I say, ‘hey guys, I know you’re going to do a terrific job’,” says Don Moerman. This may sound strange, but it cannot be denied that our body responds to how our mind works. Studies have shown that a sugar pill or a simple saline injection can achieve remarkable healing effects on people who believe in its healing properties. How does placebo effect work? Simple. Experiments have shown that belief in the medicine’s healing effects triggers the release of natural painkillers, boosts immune response, alters neuronal firing patterns, relieves hypertension and lowers heart rate. On the other hand, belief in a certain medicine’s harmful effect, called the “nocebo” effect, can even cause death.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that auto-suggestion is indeed a very powerful tool in taking full control over your body. No one can underestimate the human mind’s ability to accomplish whatever it wants – your grey matter is the most vital force that you can use to achieve healing.

Most of us have been conditioned since birth to believe that we don’t have much control over what happens to us. This mind conditioning is responsible for our inability to use our mind’s power to heal our body. But why doubt? We’ve been very good at bombarding our body with stress, worries, depression and other negative thoughts or feelings which result to illness. Why not use this power to improve our well-being? The time has come to practice what is good.

There is a great awakening going on around the world now – people are discovering this enormous power that they have not only to heal themselves but also to attract and manifest great opportunities and improvements into their lives. If you have heard about the Law of Attraction, then you know what I mean. If not, make a search about it so you can have a clearer grasp about these things.

The crux of the matter is that you need to learn to use your mind’s ability to control every single cell of your body. You walked this way once before, when, as a mere one-celled zygote, you created the body you have now by following the genetic instructions in the DNA strand inside you. If in that consciousness you were able to program your daughter stem cells into becoming specialized  cells such as blood cells, bone cells, heart cells, brain cells and so on, there’s no reason why in that higher consciousness you cannot do the same.

All you need is a little practice. But first, you need to believe that you are your body’s co-creator, just as your mother and father also played the role of being your co-creators. You need to believe that every single cell in your body is your microcosm; that they have their own consciousness and that they respond to your thoughts and feelings much more than you ever thought possible.

If you were a cell inside your body, you’d live and move and have your being inside that human entity that you are now. You wouldn’t have an idea how a human face or body looks like, much less hear and speak the way humans do. You won’t even have an idea what a human being is, nor would you know that you are also capable of becoming a human being if you are cloned. You communicate with other cells in the language that you know – electro-chemical signals and electrical impulses. But where are you getting these instructions from? How would you know that you are doing exactly what needs to be done? Plain and simple – you’re getting these instructions from the control center, the central nervous system. These instructions will be greatly influenced by the neural signals that the mind’s thoughts and feelings dictate, and as we have discussed earlier, the instructions can either be constructive or destructive, depending on what occupies the thoughts that your mind chooses to entertain.

It has been said that thoughts are things – we basically become what we think. With a little effort, you can train every cell of your body to follow your instructions.

So today is the first day of the rest of your life. Good news is, you have the power of choice. Choose life. All you need to do is be who you are – the sovereign master of your thoughts. Fill your mind with beautiful and happy thoughts; think greatly of others, be appreciative, be grateful and choose to see only that which is good always. Choose to forgive, to be patient, to be nice, to be understanding, to be kind, to laugh, live and love.

Before you know it, everything will fall into place. Like a puzzle that is finally completed, your life will become a beautiful picture worthy to be displayed for others to see – and emulate.

How to Stop Your Killer T-Cells from Attacking Your Beta-Cells
Jean Louise Quino/Diabetic Products

Killer T-Cell
If you are suffering from Type 1 diabetes and you’ve been doing your research, you already know that your worst enemy is within yourself. There is a mutiny going on inside your very own body – the soldiers who are supposed to protect you are the very ones who are trying to destroy you. Until now, medical science has not found the reason why killer T-cells attack the body’s own insulin producing cells.
Some call it misinformation –  that the killer cells are confused; others call it gene mutation – that the cells are only following the instructions gone wrong. Whether science will ultimately find out the real root of the problem or not is not the question. The question is how to stop these mutinous cells from the senseless thing they’re doing

It has been established that neurons, or brain cells communicate and understand each other through electro-chemical signals and electrical impulses. These communication system works in much the same way as relay races - sending messages through a network of cells lined up between other cells from different parts of the body to the brain. Some of these substances, such as insulin, have been known for years, but scientists are now discovering that they are produced by the brain, not just by organs like the pancreas.

Sensory neurons from the outer parts of your body send electrical impulses into the central nervous system. For example, if you touch something hot, these sensory neurons send the message from your hand to your central nervous system telling you that your hand is hot. In response, the central nervous system will send motor neurons to your fingers, telling you to take your hand off from the hot object.

This is commonly known as reflexes - your body does this without you making an effort to tell your neurons what to do. But you do activate these neurons subconsciously through your thoughts and feelings. When you are angry, this feeling manifests strongly and your central nervous system sends motor neurons to your outer body parts, causing you to act violently at times. Internally, the damage is worse. Anger, as well as stress, triggers the release of stress hormone cortisol. Small doses of this hormone can give one an energy lift, but large and frequent doses can decrease bone density; suppress the body’s immune response; suppress the thyroid function, impair the brain’s thinking ability; cause hypertension; and can create a blood sugar imbalance. Anger and stress also releases chemicals that clot the blood and impede circulation, which may result in a stroke or a heart failure. Anger also slows down your body metabolism, may trigger binges and weight gain, compromise lung functions, stimulates the release of gastric acids, which results in gastrointestinal acid reflux and gastric ulcers.

On the other hand, studies reveal that feelings of love, acts of love, doing good deeds and even sexual activities can release dopamine, oxytocin, endorphins, vasopressin and DHEA hormone. These chemicals are known to enhance the immune system, help prevent cancer, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, depression, memory problem, help stabilize the blood's sugar levels and prevent the onset of diabetes in adults, among others.

As you can see, the effects of the opposing feelings of anger and love are also divergent. Come to think of it - there is a gamut of emotions from A-Z that make our body produce chemicals that are either beneficial or detrimental to our well-being.

The emotional center of the brain, called hypothalamus, is responsible in transforming emotions into physical response. It also controls the body's appetites, blood sugar levels, some glands, the heart, lung, circulatory systems among others. Through the neuropeptides, emotions are channeled  from mind to body and vice versa, virtually influencing every major section of the immune system.

There you have it. Somewhere along the line, one or several of your ancestors unwittingly
changed their genetic instructions by letting anger, fear, hatred, bitterness and rage reign in their lives, and these defective information was handed down from one generation to another, making your very own line of defense attack your own body.

Good news is, positive feelings are much stronger than negative emotions. By filling your mind with whatever is lovely, whatever is pure, whatever is noble, whatever is good, you can slowly retrain your killer cells by bombarding them with friendly hormones that can neutralize them.

Nurturing anger and hatred is just like drinking poison and wishing that your enemy will die. Being angry cannot change your enemy, rather, it can destroy your well-being. Learn to forgive and let go, and start anew. A healthy body starts with a healthy lifestyle and a healthy attitude.

New Hope for Diabetics

Is it possible to program stem cells to become pancreatic cells? A new report cites the possibility, as a rare genetic disorder gives scientists the insight how the pancreas develops.

It is ironic that a rare genetic condition that is worse than diabetes can offer hope to diabetics. Pancreatic agenesis, a rare genetic condition where the body is unable to produce a pancreas is shedding light into the relentless battle against diabetes. In addition to producing enzymes to help absorb and digest food, the pancreas regulates the blood sugar levels of the body by releasing the hormone insulin.

Pancreatic β-cells produce all the insulin that the human body requires to maintain a normal blood sugar level. Diabetes is a result of impaired glucose metabolism due to defects in the development. expansion or maintenance of β-cell mass. Scientists think that identifying the molecular regulators of these processes might lead to new solutions for diabetes.

Published in the journal Nature Genetics, the pancreatic agenesis study reveals  how certain nonspecializing stem cells can possibly be converted into pancreatic beta cells.

A team of international researchers led by scientists from the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Exeter reports a mutation in the gene GATA6 found in fifteen out of twenty-seven individuals with pancreatic agenesis. The study sees GATA6 playing a key role in the development of pancreatic cells. According to researchers, the mutation can be the reason for the pancreatic disorders among diabetics.

The leader of the team, Andrew Hattersley, has this to say: "This rare genetic condition has provided us with a surprising insight into how the pancreas develops. What is it that programs cells to become pancreatic beta cells? Our study suggests that GATA6 plays a very important role in this process and we hope this will help the crucial work to try and make beta-cells for patients with type 1 diabetes."

Meanwhile, another team lead by psychiatrist G. Richard Smith are conducting experiments on how the mind can help heal the body using a much less costly means - simple visualization techniques. He is not alone. To date,  there are thousands of new studies that explore the methods of imagery and relaxation in healing the body and keeping it healthy.

One noteworthy story is that of cell biologist Joan Borysenko, a young cancer researcher at Harvard Medical School. A strict scientist, she was doubtful about the positive effects of mind conditioning but she was compelled to try the method because of urgent personal needs. Her marriage just crumbled, and she was going through the rigors of juggling her time and effort between single motherhood and her laboratory work. Soon migraine, spastic colon, hypertension and bronchitis took her down. Medicine offered little or no comfort at all. In desperation she tried to use meditation and guided imagery. There was much resistance at first, but she persisted and in time she was healed. "I was left with a feeling of having been washed clean, like the earth after a heavy rain", she said.

She then founded the Mind/Body Group now working at New England Deaconess Hospital. Together with her colleagues, she guides patients which include AIDS victims in using meditation, guided imagery and other techniques to alleviate the conditions of those who want to add this dimension to standard treatments.
Good news is, you don't have to wait for these experiments to be proven. You can start using it for your advantage with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

A Grateful Heart Spells the Difference

A Grateful Heart Spells the Difference

Yesterday, February 6, 2012, was a day different from all others. In the very place I live, a 6.8 strong earthquake hit us and a tsunami alert was issued by Philvoics. After an hour, reports that the sea level was rising hit the air and went viral via cellphones. Soon, people were rushing out of their houses, frantically running towards elevated places, carrying no belongings with them but their lives and the lives of their precious children. Panic set in and even huge malls were left unattended as attendants, sales clerks and other employees scampered for their lives, including the sentries. It was certainly a heyday for thieves and robbers, but also a frustrating one, as they realized they only have two hands.

After the tsunami alert was lifted, the throng hastily headed back to their individual homes, only to find their homes ransacked and many, if not most of their belongings (which cost them their lifetime earnings) ransacked and stolen.

The reactions were mixed, but I can classify them into two groups: the grateful and the ungrateful.

The ungrateful arrived home stressed, tired and exhausted, only to find more stress aggravating circumstances. So they ranted and raved against the false alarm, against the government, against the media,  against the thieves, against society as a whole, against the deities.. Infuriated and raged, they slept and tossed at night and faced the morning with the same feeling of anger and frustration and most likely, they will vent it to the people around them and create a ripple of negative feelings.

The grateful on the other hand arrived home tired but relieved, thankful that the tsunami did not materialize. They shudder at the thought of what could have been and their hearts are filled with gratitude that they are still alive. Though they lost some or most of their belongings, they shrug it off, knowing that their lives are more precious than their belongings and they comfort themselves with the joy of having their family intact. They are able to sleep well at night, greet the morning with a smile and send positive vibes to all people around them.

I tell you, the second group is rare. But they are the kind of people who succeed more, win more battles and live more fulfilling lives.

"What has this got to do with my diabetes?"  you might ask. A lot. You are also fighting a battle against diabetes. One way to win the battle is to keep the stress down, and one very effective way to keep the stress down is to be thankful about everything and looking at the brighter side of life. Think how much worry, frustration, anger and resentment you are going to save yourself from. And think how good that would be for your life.
